Extraction process



No, we use natural CO2 from spring and well sources which has no impact on the CO2 concentration of the athmosphere. Additionally, the solvent is inert, non-toxic and non-flammable.


Evonik has been working with SFE since 1980, continuously improving on the process and the technology to either optimize existing products or develop completely new, high-quality solutions for various end markets.


Evonik finds that scCO2 extraction technology is a most effective tool for a wide range of applications - aroma extraction; hop extraction for the brewery industry; pesticide removal from liquids and solids; sterilization; and phyto de-oiling for the removal of polyunsaturated fatty acids, carotinoids, and sterols.


The solubility of scCO2 is perfectly tailored for the extraction of molecules relevant to flavor applications. Essentially, solubility decreases with increasing polarity and/or molecular weight. Relatively light, small lipophilic molecules (<400 m.w.) like volatile aroma compounds (e.g., monoterpenes, sesqueterpenes, esters, ketons, lactones and most essential oil components) are easily soluble in scCO2. Heavier substances, oleoresins, (up to m.w. ~2000) like fatty oils, waxes, resins, alkaloids, cartoinoids and water are moderately soluble in scCO2. Insoluble are all polar substances - oligo elements and polymers (e.g., salts, proteins, amino acids, polysaccharides, polyterpenes, saponones, tannins, phosholipids, glycosides).


GRAS means "Generally Recognized As Safe." It is a regulatory expression which clearly states that scCO2-extraction is an approved, permitted and safe extraction method for foodstuffs worldwide according to good manufacturing practices (GMP). Additionally, CO2 is a safe extraction solvent which completely evaporates leaving no harmful/toxic residues or by-products, and provides a green and sustainable image.


This is a consequence of the unique properties of compressed scCO2, which can be summarized as: a flexible solvent power ideal for flavor tailoring, no residual solvent traces, and 100% retention of the raw material's identity.
