Nicotine is a toxic molecule, therefore the potential risks involved are too high to be handled in a multi-purpose food plant such as Evonik's.
Evonik does work with customers on developmental projects on either an exclusive or non-exclusive basis. If the product can be achieved via supercritical scCO2 extraction, Evonik is also able to produce it on demand. Development costs are calculated individually for each new product. The costs and days required are very different depending on whether the project involves a simple trial or requires several different process conditions, special raw material preparation, post extractive work, etc.
Evonik has extensive experience with the extraction of liquid fruit distillates, e.g., Apple, Banana, Black Currant, Peach, Strawberry, etc. Although the Fruit CO2 FTNFs (from the named fruit) are no longer featured as a standard product within our portfolio, they are available on a contracted tolling basis. In this case, the customer supplies the raw material and pays for the extraction service only. The raw material typically used as the basis for the extraction of the scCO2 Fruit FTNFs is 150 - 200 fold aroma waters obtained during fruit juice production/concentration (i.e., removal of 83% of water by vacuum distillation). The resulting flavor extract is a super concentrate that is ~150,000 stronger than the original starting material with the ability to provide a genuine, true to the fruit aroma and flavor. When considering whether a crop is appropriate to be defatted by scCO2 extraction, it is necessary to look at the original fat/oil content and its stability (oxidation). Highly oily crops like cocoa (50-60% oil or higher) require a pre-manufacturing step (press cake to remove the majority of the oil) until the industrial standard of 10-12% oil is reached. Then scCO2 extraction is applied to completely remove all CO2-solubles excluding the concentrated unsolbules (e.g., polyphenols or lecithins). The residual oil content is <0.5% neutral lipids. For crops that cannot be cold-pressed for various reasons, it might be worth considering the addition of an inert carrier which helps to prepare a manageable, stable powder fit for extraction. For crops with a low level of oil (e.g., brans like millet, oat, wheat) the scCO2 extraction process can be applied directly with no pre-manufacturing step. Preparation of the raw material is extremely important to ensure the efficacy, such as proper grinding, flaking or pelletizing.
A substantial part of Evonik's scCO2 extraction activities is based on tolling, i.e., our customer supplies the raw material and pays for the service only. Tolling projects normally start with a feasibility trial in the lab plant (details see "development projects" above). Tolling prices are based per kg of input raw material.
